Druya in paintings
The second souvenir set of ecological and local history colouring postcards was released in the series "Along the Rural Roads of Belarus". Although this set, like the ‘Opsa’ one, was released in the series about travelling in the countryside, it is dedicated to a place that has never been considered a village.
The picturesque little town of Druya in the north-east of Braslav district, Vitebsk region, is situated on the bank of the Western Dvina River. Since this waterway has been an important trade route since ancient times, the importance of the town of Druya was very high at different times. Druya was first mentioned in chronicles of the 14th century as a grand-princely possession. It flourished in the 17th century, when the town was owned by the Sapieha family. At that time the town received Magdeburg law, churches, monasteries were built here, and the Druya Gospel was created. Located at the crossroads of many roads, Druya became a meeting place for different religions - Orthodox, Old Believers, Catholics, Protestants and Jews lived here quite peacefully. Unfortunately, due to many circumstances, the town has lost its former significance, but it has not lost its charm, which the artists have tried to convey in a set of ecological and local history coloring cards.
The set "Druya" includes 7 mini-kits:
- Between Western Dvina and Druika Rivers;
- Druya – Dukštas Narrow Gauge Railway ;
- Great Synagogue;
- Church of the Annunciation;
- Holy Trinity Church;
- Druya School;
- Sapezhin.
The 6-8 cards each tell the story of Druya's past and present life.
From the mini-kit Between the Western Dvina and Druika Rivers and Sapezhin you can learn about the ancient history of the town and its formation in the 17th century, its owners and sights - Borisov Stone, Druya Evangel, Dormition Church, ferry, castle, manor house - all this is in the colouring books and comments to them.
The history of the railway in Druya and significant places along its route are reflected in the mini-kit Druya - Dukštas Narrow Gauge Railway.
The Christian shrines of Druya, as well as modern initiatives of the clergy and parishioners can be found in the mini-kits Church of the Annunciation and Holy Trinity Church.
The town's Jewish history is told in the mini-kit The Great Synagogue.
The interesting life of the Druya school students - school garden, holidays, hiking, rafting - is shown on the sheets of the mini-kit of the same name.
Everyone who picks up a colouring cards becomes a kind of co-author of the story, as if restoring it in colour. By the way, restoration in the Druya set has become a unifying theme. A professional restorer left his notes on the cover of each mini-kit.
Getting to know the Druya set can be the beginning of a big journey through the Braslav region, and the set itself will be a good guide to the modern town - much of what is drawn can be easily learnt on the spot.
